May 8, 2025, 4 members of MSP Chapter met at the Golden Valley Library to discuss SCAMs.
Four Signs That It’s a SCAM
1. Scammers PRETEND to be from an organization you know.
2. Scammers say there’s a PROBLEM or a PRIZE.
3. Scammers PRESSURE you to act immediately.
4. Scammers tell you to PAY in a specific way.
How to spot a SCAM.
- Fabricated news stories that make you feel worried or scared,
- Viral messages on WhatsApp and Messenger. If you know the person who's shared it, you might be more likely to believe it.
- Deep fakes. Videos and photos where people’s faces are edited to make it look like they said or did something they didn’t.
- Memes used to spread unverified facts.
- Urgency in the message or caller -“You need to do this right now! “ “Limited number of offers available so act now!” “Please help me now!”
- Often from an email.
What to do
1. Check the email address. It may be from a person you know but when you hover over it the address is displayed and not known to you.
2. Do not open or respond. Mark as JUNK and moved to trash
3. Not not call lists are not effective on your cell phones. Use “Silence Unknow Calls” in your cell phone settings.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
We had time to answer a couple of members questions regarding their phone or computer. Both issues were resolved.
Our next meeting will be July 10, 10:00-11:45 at the Golden Valley Library. Bring your questions, devices and learn something new.
Attendance is limited to 8 due to room capacity.
Please reply to the reminder email whether or not you will be attending. The reminder email will go out a few days before the meeting. To get this email add your name to the Technology Group.
