The Dig (2021) is a beautifully understated historical drama based on the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo, one of Britain’s most important archaeological discoveries. Carey Mulligan plays Edith Pretty, a wealthy widow who hires self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate mysterious burial mounds on her estate.

Set on the eve of World War II, it’s about much more than archaeology—mortality, legacy, class, love, and what we leave behind. Quiet, thoughtful and visually beautiful, it has a very British, contemplative feel.
