About this event

Sunday, July 12, 2026, 11:00 AM

Discover the rich history, culture, and colorful characters of Manhattan’s Upper West Side on this fascinating neighborhood tour. From the largest Gothic structure in the world to a university whose graduates have won more Oscars than any other school in the United States, the Upper West Side is filled with iconic landmarks and surprising stories. You’ll also explore locations connected to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and uncover the ties this historic neighborhood has to legends of crime, film, and entertainment.

Experience the neighborhood through the eyes of someone who truly knows it. Tour guide Gary Dennis was born, raised, and still lives on the Upper West Side. His passion for New York City history began when he discovered that a pivotal battle of the American Revolution took place just two blocks from his childhood home. Soon after, he learned that Humphrey Bogart had grown up down the block, and that the neighborhood itself helped shape the man he became. Gary brings the Upper West Side to life with engaging stories, hidden history, and fascinating details you may have never known about this iconic part of New York City.

When you walk the neighborhood with someone who lives it, you will see:

  • A beautiful walk along Riverside Drive and Riverside Park.
  • See a building that was a location for two of the biggest movies of 2007.
  • A memorial to a couple who had first-class tickets on the Titanic, neighborhood residents who left their mark on the world of retailing and philanthropy.
  • A row of homes that, for over a century, housed the Davis (Baking Powder) family, the doctor who gave us the EpiPen, all of Duke Ellington’s sheet music, the Faber pencil king, and a gang involved with a notorious 1934 robbery.
  • The building that was the inspiration for a “spooky building” in the 1984 film Ghostbusters.
  • The official NYC Firemen’s Memorial.
  • The building that gave a Motion Picture Studio its name.
  • Humphrey Bogart’s childhood home.
  • We will wind our way through the old village of “Bloomingdale,” ending at 103rd Street.
  • The total distance is 2.1 miles spread out over 2.5 hours.

Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as this tour has a lot of walking.

*Optional Lunch: Pay-On-Your-Own
After the tour, we’ll head to a nearby restaurant for an optional dinner to continue the conversation about the walking tour and enjoy each other’s company. Please plan to bring cash to cover your meal.

Our Guide: Gary Denis

A native New Yorker, the product of an insanely competitive family of "know-it-alls". My parents, younger brothers, and I all love New York City history, and to get some parental attention, I had to be historically correct and entertaining at the same time. I also love old movies, read up on Hollywood and Broadway history, studied old theaters and their architects, and ultimately threw all that into the plea for attention. I love this city and all its peculiarities, and I love sharing it with newcomers, returning visitors, or native New Yorkers—anyone who wants to know why Wall Street is called Wall Street, where is the "square" in Times Square, or where are the batteries in Battery Park. I'll tell you these and other fascinating things you never knew about this amazing place I call home because "there are 8 million stories in the naked city", and I will share with you as many as possible.
