Inspiring Women: Helen Scott
Unsung Heroine of the French New Wave Cinema
This month we feature Helen Scott (1915-1987), whose crucial behind-the-scenes contributions to the career of French film director Francois Truffaut were recently celebrated in two new books: a biography, “L’Amie Americaine,” and “Mon Petit Truffe, Ma Grande Scottie,” a collection of correspondence between Scott and Truffaut in the early 1960s.
Scott’s film career—which included film PR, writing English subtitles, collaborating on the book of conversations between Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock, and making cameo appearances in films by Truffaut and Godard—was only part of her story, and only began when she was in her forties.
Born in America but raised partially in France when her father became AP Correspondent in Moscow, Scott dropped out of school at fourteen, became a Communist and labor activist, was assistant to journalist Genevieve Tabouis working for the French Resistance from the US, made radio broadcasts for the Resistance from Brazzaville, Congo, and served as press attache at the Nuremberg trials.
Who else attended meetings with Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1940s and Warren Beatty and Bill Murray thirty years later?
